Mentally Fit York

Support on-the-ground mental health initiatives and transformational research with a gift today.

Mentally Fit York is the University's fund to transform mental health on a local, national and international scale, through supporting on the ground initiatives and the latest groundbreaking research. A donation today will help improve mental health and wellbeing in many forms, reaching out from the University to the city's communities and beyond.

With the rising cost of living combined with the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the past two years have been incredibly difficult and a there has never been a more important time to look after our mental health. The pandemic affected our mental health in many different ways and put an extra strain on everyone, including our students. On top of this, 60% of University of York students are worried about finances due to the current cost of living crisis. ('Tell us' student survey)

Thanks to our incredible donor community, we've been able to continue to support on-the-ground initiatives that need help now as well as those longer-term research projects that aim to create lasting, systemic changes to the ways in which we tackle mental health as an issue.

In the past few years, support from people like you has helped to fund:

  • 24/7 access for all students and offer holders to mental health and wellbeing advice via an online platform.
  • Outreach work through the Tea and Coffee Club to members of the local community at risk of social isolation and;
  • New Mental Health Nursing Scholarships to support student nurses from low income backgrounds.

Please help us continue that work with a gift to Mentally Fit York.

“Your support has been vital to supporting student mental health at the University during a time of change and challenges for all of us. We felt it important to provide students who might be experiencing an increase in anxiety, depression or other common mental health issues with a first-class service that could provide remote support.

Our ability to quickly intervene through opening access to the Togetherall was down solely to the generous support of donors to Mentally Fit York. We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to all those donors who made this possible."

    - Professor Karen Bloor, Professor of Health Economics and Policy and Chair of the Mentally Fit York Disbursement Group

As well as supporting student mental health right now, your support is also helping to contribute to evidence on student wellbeing and promote student mental health through research projects like our Student Psychological Wellbeing Cohort study, which is also supported by philanthropic donations.

This project aims to establish a university-wide student mental health and psychological wellbeing cohort. This involves measuring individuals’ psychological wellbeing before they join the University and following people up at regular intervals during their time studying at York. The cohort will provide a robust means for sustainable, ongoing data collection on psychological wellbeing and mental health among students.

This vital support and research could not be possible without people like you. Please help to support work like this by donating today to Mentally Fit York. A regular gift or a one-off donation of any size can help transform mental health on a local, national and international scale.

Thank you.
